Lane Community College receives $114,000 grant to support child care for low-income student parents

Lane Community College received more than $114,000 in grant funding to support child care for student parents.

The grants, given to LCC and three other schools, totals more than $400,000, according to a news release Tuesday from U.S. Sens. Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley.

The funds, from the Child Care Access Means Parents in School program that provides grants to colleges to support low-income student parents in post-secondary education by providing campus-based child care services, were awarded to:

Cheryl Henderson, the child and family education manager for LCC, said she is "thrilled" to once again be a recipient of the grants that can used for before-school and after-school services.

"We know that child care can be a barrier for many people who would like to go to college, so having safe, high-quality and affordable early-childhood care and education right here on campus can help these students succeed and create brighter futures for their whole families," she said in the release.

Wyden acknowledged the increased difficulty of completing a college degree, and Merkley said he is grateful for the benefit the grants will provide to low-income families in need of child care, helping encourage them to attend higher education.

"Every Oregonian who chooses to seek higher education deserves the support they need to succeed regardless of whether or not they are a parent," Merkley said in the release.

"The need for child care should not be a barrier to obtaining a college degree and I will support any parent who aspires to achieve that milestone."
