Pa. baby saved from opioid overdose, mom charged: report

Patriot-News - 9/27/2021

A Pittsburgh-area baby was revived with naloxone over the weekend, resulting in charges for its mother, according to reports.

The 10-month-old baby was rescued with the overdose reversal drug on Saturday morning when police were called to a home in Ambridge for a report of an unresponsive baby, KDKA reports.

When police arrived, they were told the baby got into a “bundle of heroin” and was overdosing, the outlet reported. Officers had to give the baby two doses of naloxone and CPR until paramedics arrived.

Ambridge Police Chief John DeLuca told the outlet that investigators believe the baby ingested a “heroin stamp bag” through her mouth. The baby’s condition was not reported.

The overdose resulted in the arrest of the baby’s mother, 27-year-old Melissa Miller, KDKA reported.

Online court dockets show Miller is charged with felony child endangerment, felony aggravated assault of a victim younger than 6 years old, felony possession of a controlled substance, and misdemeanor reckless endangerment.

Miller is being held in Beaver County Jail on $200,000 bail.

Parents around the state are facing serious charges following the overdoses of their children.

Multiple people have been convicted in the 2018 overdose death of 3-year-old Logan Starliper, from Franklin County, including her mother’s boyfriend and a man involved in dealing the drugs. Starliper ingested methamphetamine and buprenorphine.

Starliper’s mother previously pleaded guilty to third-degree murder.
