Springfield man charged with strangulation, assault in domestic violence incident

Springfield police arrested a 39-year-old man Friday for assault and weapons charges related to an alleged domestic violence incident on Tuesday.

Police responded to a report of an assault and strangulation Tuesday that required the victim to get medical attention at a hospital, according to a news release.

Officers learned the 39-year-old had fired a gun during an argument with the victim and still had the gun, according to the news release.

The victim began staying at other places to keep away from her alleged attacker.

Springfield and Eugene officers kept watch on several places to find the suspect, who was believed to be armed, according to the news release.

Officers patrolling around R Street in Springfield on Friday found a vehicle believed to be associated with the suspect, the news release said. During a traffic stop, officers identified the suspect as a passenger and arrested him, according to the news release.

Officers found a gun between the seat and center console, the news release said.

The man was charged with strangulation, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, being a felon in possession of a firearm and two counts of fourth-degree assault.
