5 more SLO County residents die of COVID-19. Here are the age groups

Tribune - 1/25/2022

Jan. 25—Five more San Luis Obispo County residents have died of COVID-19, the Public Health Department reported Tuesday as the death toll for the entire pandemic nears 400 locally.

The latest deaths were in the 65-84 and 85+ age groups. A total of 389 SLO County residents have died from the virus.

As the omicron variant continues to spread widely throughout the community, SLO County is still seeing high numbers of new cases, with 1,037 reported on Tuesday, second most in a single day to the 1,265 reported on Thursday.

Despite these record-high cases, health officials warn this is an undercount of local cases because these numbers do not include positive, at-home antigen tests.

"Data teams are working seven days a week to keep up with the speed of new cases but estimate more than 2,000 additional cases have yet to be counted," according to a news release from Public Health.

Here's how local coronavirus case numbers from the past four days break down day by day:

— Saturday: 659

— Sunday: 50

— Monday: 388

— Tuesday: 1037

A total of 2,134 new cases were reported over the last four days, bringing the county's 14-day average to a new all-time high of 590, according to Public Health.

January has now seen 11,194 new infections, making it by far the worst month of the pandemic in terms of new cases and a 50% increase over January 2021. To compare, 7,437 cases were reported in that same month a year ago — the height of the winter surge before the delta variant arrived.

There are now 3,059 active cases in the county. That number has been fluctuating wildly over the last couple weeks. In a span of 15 days, it has been as high as 3,816 and as low as 1,764.

Pressure on local hospitals remains high, with 54 people receiving in-patient treatment, including 10 in the intensive care unit and one patient under the age of 17. ICU capacity stands at 39% as of Tuesday.

The data indicates people who are unvaccinated are more likely to be hospitalized or die from COVID-19. Roughly 66% of new COVID-19 cases, 79% of hospitalizations and 76% of deaths since June 15 in the county are people who are unvaccinated, according to Public Health.

"The only way we are going to get out from under this pandemic is to see very high global vaccination rates and we can start at home," said Dr. Penny Borenstein, county health officer.
