State College Borough approves temporary mask mandate

Patriot-News - 9/14/2021

Effective immediately, masks must be worn indoors in State College.

On Monday, State College Borough Council unanimously approved a temporary COVID-19 ordinance mandating businesses and other facilities operating in the borough require employees and customers wear masks.

The mandate expires Nov. 22 and those found in violation could be fined $300. According to Onward State, the borough’s Board of Health said those 2 years and older, regardless of vaccination status, should wear face coverings.

The Centers for Disease Control lists Centre County has having a high rate of COVID-19 transmission. In fact, every county in Pennsylvania is experiencing “high” community transmission, according to the CDC.

Onward State reported the borough’s Board of Health recommended the proposed ordinance on Sept. 2 but did not suggest gathering size limits for businesses, public facilities, and private properties.

The mandate aligns with Penn State’s current rules, which require masks be worn inside all campus buildings, regardless of vaccination status.

The borough’s mandate comes as Penn State will host Auburn University this Saturday at Beaver Stadium. Last weekend, more than 105,000 fans attended the Nittany Lion’s game against Ball State.
