Mental Health, COVID-19 and gun violence are topics of PennLive’s 6 p.m. Tuesday webinar and Facebook Live

Patriot-News - 7/6/2021

Harrisburg Police Commissioner Thomas C. Carter and mental health professionals will discuss the surge in gun violence in our region and its relation to the increased anxiety and stress resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic in a 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 6, webinar that will be streamed live on Facebook.

Psychologists are warning we are in the midst of a mental health crisis associated with the isolation and emotional turmoil they say COVID-19 has caused. PennLive is partnering with the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg to sponsor a series of webinars to explore why mental health professionals are worried about a crisis, and how it is likely to be manifest in our region and throughout the nation.

Dr. Marissa Brown, UPMC psychologist, has warned of the impact on the mental health of youth, who have faced school closures, loss of social activities and stress over the wellbeing of parents and grandparents. Many have had limited support and counseling during times of significant emotional upheaval. And many families have suffered significant financial stress as businesses closed and thousands became unemployed.

Dr. Brown and Commissioner Carter will be joined by Tina Clymer, Administrator at the Carbon-Monroe-Pike Mental Health and Developmental Services and Sharon Engdahl, Executive Director American Mental Wellness Association, to examine issues surrounding fears of a mental health crisis and what it could mean for the post-COVID society.

PennLive Outreach and Opinion Editor Joyce M. Davis will moderate the discussion and take respectful questions from those who register for the webinar.

The event will be streamed to Facebook pages of PennLive and the World Affairs Council of Harrisburg.
